I bought my ScanSnap iX1600 on Amazon in January 2025. The iX2500 replaced it. I haven't used the iX2500, but the basic idea is the same: it's a standalone scanner.
For years I used the scanner on my all-in-one printer. I'm sure that's what most people do.
A standalone scanner is so much easier to use. It was worth the investment just because it goes quick.
Now I scan things I wouldn't have bothered with before. More of my paperwork stays on my computer instead of in a paper file.
What it is
The ScanSnap iX2500 is a standalone document scanner.
It scans up to 45 sheets a minute, both sides in one pass. The iX1600 is rated at up to 40.
The paper tray holds 100 sheets, twice what the iX1600 holds. The touchscreen is 5 inches, up from 4.3.
How I use it
I use my iX1600 for real estate paperwork, tax paperwork and receipts. That includes receipts from car mechanics, so I have a folder on my computer for repairs.
My scans go to my computer. I use Wi-Fi because I have three computers connected to it.
What's held up
My iX1600 works as well as the day I bought it.
I don't have to remember how to use it after a break. I just stick the paper in and it scans.
I've had one paper jam. The paper had been creased for a long time and didn't flatten out enough. No software problems, but the software seems to need updating a lot.
The one thing to think about
You might think you don't scan enough to justify a standalone scanner. That's what I thought.
I used to dread scanning things because it took a long time. Sometimes I forgot how to do it on the printer, and a lot of times there'd be some sort of problem. I don't have those problems with my iX1600.
Who it's right for, and who it isn't
If you have to scan paper and can afford it, I'd get one.
I will admit, for me, it's a luxury item since I don't really scan that much, but to me, it's worth it.
You have to decide for yourself whether it's worth it or not. You can probably make do with a multifunction printer like I did for years if you're concerned about the money.
